Coffins

Coffins, caskets or shrouds for use in this burial ground must consist entirely of biodegradable materials such as natural fibres, softwoods, cardboard or wicker. We are happy for you to provide your own, or for your Funeral Director to supply one as long as it is approved by us beforehand (some so-called biodegradable coffins actually have plastic linings etc.). However, there are many different styles and qualities of coffins available now, coming from various countries. If you wish to be sure of a specific model below, at our prices, then you need to tell us directly, or inform your Funeral Director that you want the coffin from us.

Unfortunately we cannot accept chipboard or hardwoods, brass or plastic handles, or any other artificial materials. Some of the coffins come with their own liners, but, regardless of this, we provide a biodegradable, waterproof lining for every coffin we sell.

As regards ashes caskets, these will often be made of non-biodegradable materials; or when collected from the crematorium will most likely be in a plastic container. In this case it is perfectly fine for the ashes to be poured into the grave, although many people choose our Acorn Urn as a pleasing, practical option.

All the coffins below are available from us here; and some, as marked, can be sent anywhere in the UK.

Pine Coffin - made from solid pine from FSC certified forests, sanded but untreated and unstained, with no metal or plastic fixings. It is a traditional-shaped, heavy, robust casket. In sizes: 5'8"   5'10"   6'0"   6'2". It can be carried by the natural rope handles.
Bamboo Coffins - made with woven strips from bamboo grown in plantations (not from the wild) in China, by a British company. Comes with heavy-duty cotton liner. The Eco is fairly light, whilst The Lattice is heavier and more substantial. Both can be carried using the handles. Sizes range from infant up to 7'0". These can be sent anywhere in the UK for burials at other sites.

English Willow Coffins - made from willow grown and woven in England. Many willow coffins on the market are from Eastern European countries now, but we like where possible, to support the traditional skills of Britain. These also can be sent anywhere in the UK for burials at other sites. The woven willow handles can be used for carrying. Comes with unbleached cotton lining. In 2 styles: traditional-shaped or round-ended, in sizes from infant up to 6'4" (larger sizes can be ordered). The coffins are inlaid with a coloured woven band with a choice of colours.
Cardboard Coffins - these are traditional-styled, shouldered caskets made from recycled cardboard with a biodegradable print; sturdy construction, tested up to 23 stone. Can be carried by the strong rope handles. Comes in 2 styles: mottled green (6'1" only) and woodgrain (6'7" only)
The Acorn Urn - This wonderful little urn is made from recycled paper overlaid with green or russet mulberry paper. With a simple press-on lid, its acorn shape is satisfying and practical. Can be sent by post anywhere in the UK for ashes burials at other sites. (Width 20cm, height 30cm to top of lid).
