BROCKLANDS
Woodland Burial

FAQs

  1. When can I visit Brocklands?

The site is open during daylight hours, and you may come just to see what it looks like; or to visit a family grave there, at any time, and you do not need to contact us first.

  2. Do I have to buy the coffin from you?

No - we are happy for you or your funeral director to provide a coffin, as long as we can OK it first. We keep a selection of coffins for sale which we know are fully biodegradable. (Some so-called biodegradable coffins have plastic liners, or are made from chipboard).

  3. Can I choose the type of tree?

Yes. Ashes, Single and Double Plots have a corresponding Tree List with 5 or 6 trees on each. The larger plots can have larger tree species planted on them. All trees are provided by us.

  4. Do I pay extra for the trees and flowers?

No, the 'burial fee' includes these so there is no extra to pay. We do ask people not to bring their own seeds or plants - we will provide native plants and bulbs, and if the family wishes to do the planting themselves, then that's fine by us.

  5. How many people usually attend the graveside?

It varies from one or two people up to 50 or 60. Typically, there may be 10-20 people present.

  6. Is there a toilet on the site?

Yes, anyone attending a burial may use the toilet in the Haybarn (small stone building on site), though it is locked at other times. Please note there is a step up to the door, and then a step down into the Haybarn, so some disabled visitors may find the access difficult.

  7. Is there room on site to hold a commemorative service?

Yes. The Haybarn can be booked for a small fee (see 'The Haybarn'). It can accommodate 30 people sitting and 10-15 standing. It is a heated and comfortably furnished room, and there are toilet facilities.

  8. Is there somewhere to have funeral teas?

Yes. The Haybarn can be hired for small numbers, although families need to provide their own food and drink (see 'The Haybarn'). We will provide tables, chairs, cutlery and crockery. Alternatively, families can use local pubs and hotels.

  9. Will the graves stay there for ever?

Yes, as much as anyone can promise anything 'forever'. The burial site has been put in Trust to remain as a burial site for a minimum of 80 years, ie. three generations.

  10. Is there a choice of size or type of plot?

Yes. If the family has a wish for a particular tree, such as an oak, or they simply would prefer a larger plot, they can purchase a Double Plot, Single Plot, or an Ashes Plot for, say, the cremated remains of one individual. Likewise, a single coffin burial may take place in the centre of a Double Plot, if desired, so that the family may choose a larger type of tree.

  11. My mother was cremated five years ago, but my father wishes to be buried when he dies. Can her ashes be put in with his coffin?

Yes, cremated remains of someone else may be placed either inside the coffin, or buried with the coffin at the time of burial. The cremated remains must themselves also be in a biodegradable container. Unfortunately we cannot bury the ashes of one person in the grave of another at a later date. In this instance the ashes could be scattered over the first person's grave, or, if the family had bought a Double Plot, then one grave could have a coffin burial, and the second grave next to it an ashes burial.
